DIY: destination boxes

Z Gallerie destination boxes, $119.80

While working on my previous home accessories post, I came across the above set of "books" from Z Gallerie, and thought they would make a nice addition.  After closer inspection, however, I noticed they were actually clever little storage boxes disguised as books, and was immediately inspired to create my own DIY version.

Thankfully, I'm a bit of a hoarder, so I happened to have the perfect gift box saved from a set of champagne glasses I was sent months earlier, which I used as the base.  If you're not quite as lucky to have one of these lying around, any cardboard cigar box will do the trick.

From there, I simply took measurements and designed the cover and sides using InDesign and Photoshop (feel free to email me if you'd like the templates).  I then painted the back and edges of the box black and applied the cut-outs with rubber cement....and voila!  Perfect storage for magazines, remote controls or anything else you'd like to keep hidden.  I have an infatuation with Paris, so I chose to replicate the Z Gallerie cover exactly, but really any of your favorite book covers could work!

Pretty close to the Z Gallerie version eh?  And for about $100 less!  I can't wait to make the London and New York ones next to complete the set.  Happy Hump Day everyone!
