Outfit inspiration: high socks

High socks started making their return to the runway a few seasons ago, around the Spring 2010 shows, which resulted in a huge showing during the Fall 2010 collections.  It seems the trend isn't slowing down either, showing up in various Spring and Pre-Fall 2011 collections, such as Vera Wang's above.

I think there are some trends which are easily digested by the public, such as volume: "You mean I can throw a tent over my body and look fashionable... done!"  It's non-discriminatory, all shapes, sizes and ages can wear it, it's easily accessible and requires little thought or effort (see tent quote above).

Other trends, however, take some time to marinate, be seen a few times and grow on people, before they are widely accepted and appreciated.  I think that's what's going on with high socks.  I've loved them since I first spotted them in Alexander Wang's Spring 2010 collection, but I must admit, I had a hard time figuring out how to work them into a real life outfit at first.

After looking at Vera Wang's collection and some of the inspiration photos below that I've collected over the past few months, I think I'm finally ready to rock the trend.  It's a great alternative to tights (especially when pulled up to hit just below the hemline, like in the photos above) and I think they've become just mainstream enough that I won't have to worry about being mistaken for a street walker.  I love how they look paired with boyish basics to balance out the perceived sexiness and also play on the classic school girl style!
