If you aren't quite ready to embrace Spring colors in your wardrobe, perhaps a pop of the season's hottest shade on your lips can act as a stepping stone into the brighter days ahead. Hot pink pouts were all over the Spring 2011 runways, spotted at Diane von Furstenburg, Jil Sander and Fendi, among others.
To try the look for myself, I purchased NARS lipstick in schiap (seen below) and was amazed at how wearable it is. Somehow, even though you look and your lips and think, "woah...that's really pink," when you step back and see your entire face, it's not nearly as jarring and actually looks really pretty and fresh!
It's especially stunning when paired with super highlighted skin (more on my obsession here), which makeup artist James Kaliardos achieved at DvF using M.A.C. pearl cream colour base on the cheekbones. He then created the rich lip shade using M.A.C. chromagraphic pencil in process magenta topped with M.A.C. neon pigment in magenta madness.
Despite how they look in the tube, these colors are all surprisingly do-able and universally flattering (as seen in the photos above). The trick is to keep shadow, eyeliner and blush to a minimum, and let the lips take center stage. It's also important to choose a matte finish, as opposed to a gloss, and to pick a shade with bluish undertones, rather than yellow, which will better flatter. Here are some of my favorite options...

If I have an olive complexion and I already wear a NARS hot pink blush, what shade would you suggest for my lips?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment, I'm always happy to answer reader questions!
ReplyDeleteIf you look at the combination of photos I posted, I chose girls with different colorings and complexions to show that this color is really flattering on everyone, that's what's so great about it! That being said, I'd definitely go light on the blush, maybe just a dab on the apples of your cheeks, if at all, and then go for one of brighter pinks which should pop beautifully against darker skin! The YSL color would be my recommendation, but really I bet they'd all look great!
Thanks so much for the quick reply, I'll send a pic of which one I choose!
