DIY: royal makeover

I’m sure you’re probably just as sick of all the royal wedding coverage as I am, but fortunately this post has nothing to do with Will and Kate.  A thoughtful friend of mine spotted this mannequin bust on the curb outside a closed store and decided to grab it for me since it reminded her of my vintage dress form.  I was thrilled to receive it and immediately began brainstorming ways to make it over.

I knew I wanted to paint it in some sort of cool, interesting way, so that it could double as both a display for my jewelry and as a piece of art.  I’ve seen a lot of British flag accents used in interiors recently and really love the playful, rock and roll vibe they can give to a space.  Last week's British mania wound up rekindling this flame for the flag and I decided my new mannequin would make for a perfect canvas.

The task of taping out all of the angles and lines was a bit tedious, but overall the makeover was pretty painless and I’m ecstatic with the result!  My decorating style tends to be very girly and can sometimes get a little too “matchy-matchy," so I love the offbeat and quirky charm that this piece now adds to the room.  (PS- you might recognize the Paris book in the first photo from this post!)

  3. So glad you like! Old school dress forms like the one in my Cambridge Satchel post are hard to come by for cheap, especially with how popular they've become, antiques dealers are on to it! I was lucky enough to score mine for $25 but it was in my small town in New Jersey and was also years ago when they weren't so in demand. If you want a mannequin or plastic display bust like the one above you can find a ton of used ones for about 20-30 bucks at Billy's in NYC http://www.billysantiques.com Or try looking at actual display retailers like this one http://www.nycdisplay.com/home.php?cat=287

    Good luck!

  7. You turned a relatively inexpensive torso form into a work of art. Bravo, you!
