One of the major projects on my to-do list this summer is to redecorate my bedroom and put the finishing touches on my living room. I’ve been gathering a ton of inspirational photos, but stopped dead in my tracks when I came across the above images, shot by Rick Schultz, which feature the London apartment he shares with interior designer, Jimmie Karlsson. I am in love with the artistic, quirky vibe of their place, with its pops of bright colors and irreverent artwork set against the dark grey walls.
I immediately headed over to Jimmie's design site, which is packed with even more eye candy in the form of custom home furnishings that look more like works of art than they do furniture. Some pieces actually remind me of works from artists like Richard Prince and Stephen Sprouse (who coincidentally have both done Louis Vuitton collaborations)–with their dripping brush strokes and bold, sprawling text–only adding to their desirability.
I realize these designs aren’t for everyone, but much like the Union Jack mannequin I painted recently, I believe quirky and unique art pieces are a great way to add playfulness and drama to a room. Even if commissioning a custom Jimmie Martin piece is out of your budget, there are still plenty of design elements and techniques of his that can be applied to your own custom furniture makeovers. I've grouped some of my favorites here to get the wheels turning. I can't wait to recreate one or a combo of these looks on some of my recent craigslist finds!
Update an old chair with quirky fabrics and bright paints. You can also try painting directly onto the upholstery for a more whimsical and artistic look.
Don't forget about the insides of cabinets and drawers! Painting bright hues inside a more muted piece can add a great surprise pop of color!
Make your own personalized art piece using paint pens and spray paint to scribble the lyrics to your favorite song or poem across an old piece of furniture.
Tap into you inner artist by covering old furniture with a large mural or collage. If your painting skills are lacking, you can also use tracing and transfer paper to apply your design beforehand.
