Interior inspiration: perfect imperfection

images via Song of Style

One of the major projects on my to-do list this summer is to redecorate my bedroom and put the finishing touches on my living room.  I’ve been gathering a ton of inspirational photos, but stopped dead in my tracks when I came across the above images, shot by Rick Schultz, which feature the London apartment he shares with interior designer, Jimmie Karlsson.  I am in love with the artistic, quirky vibe of their place, with its pops of bright colors and irreverent artwork set against the dark grey walls.

I immediately headed over to Jimmie's design site, which is packed with even more eye candy in the form of custom home furnishings that look more like works of art than they do furniture.  Some pieces actually remind me of works from artists like Richard Prince and Stephen Sprouse (who coincidentally have both done Louis Vuitton collaborations)–with their dripping brush strokes and bold, sprawling text–only adding to their desirability.

I realize these designs aren’t for everyone, but much like the Union Jack mannequin I painted recently, I believe quirky and unique art pieces are a great way to add playfulness and drama to a room.  Even if commissioning a custom Jimmie Martin piece is out of your budget, there are still plenty of design elements and techniques of his that can be applied to your own custom furniture makeovers.  I've grouped some of my favorites here to get the wheels turning.  I can't wait to recreate one or a combo of these looks on some of my recent craigslist finds!

Update an old chair with quirky fabrics and bright paints.  You can also try painting directly onto the upholstery for a more whimsical and artistic look.

Don't forget about the insides of cabinets and drawers!  Painting bright hues inside a more muted piece can add a great surprise pop of color!

Make your own personalized art piece using paint pens and spray paint to scribble the lyrics to your favorite song or poem across an old piece of furniture.

Tap into you inner artist by covering old furniture with a large mural or collage.  If your painting skills are lacking, you can also use tracing and transfer paper to apply your design beforehand.

White Hot American Summer

In New York, we love complaining about how cold it is during the winter, but as soon as the temperature gets too hot during the summer, it's right back to cry-town.  As much as I wanted to avoid jumping on the weather-bashing bandwagon, it is seriously hot out there...like too hot for clothes hot!  I had to do some impromptu shopping yesterday just to find pieces that are actually suitable to wear in this intense heat.

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know that I'm a huge fan of separates and layering, which I tend to favor over a lone dress or sheath.  However, these temperatures leave little choice for anything other than simple, loose, breathable fabrics–and dresses happen to be one of the best options.  I love this look book from Bec & Bridge, with it's beachy-meets-urban vibe.  Everything is relatively paired down, yet still has a fashion element to it, which is not easy to find.  Below are some more heat-approved favorites that fit the bill...

The street style darling and former part of our Harper's Bazaar Russia family, Miroslava Duma, was killing it in Paris during the couture shows.  I love the way she balances her more serious pieces with a mix of playful accessories and clever layering.  Each outfit has just the right amount of fashion and quirkiness, without ever looking like she's trying to hard, which is always my ideal.

And luckily for us, Miroslava will be providing even more wardrobe inspiration now that she's joined the fashion blog-o-sphere with her own site, Buro 24/7, which features daily outfit posts!  This news is almost too good to be true!  Peep below to see some of the sartorial feast she's already serving up...

She wore flowers in her hair...

images via: honestlywtf and fgr

Happy Friday everyone!  I'm still in love with the chic and easy look of loose summer braids, and these styles with the added touch of whispery flowers made me fall even harder.  I can't wait to attempt this on a late summer evening with an equally breezy linen dress of sorts.  So ethereal and pretty!  (Check out tutorials on how to make your own floral crown here and here)

Have a great weekend!

Getting carded...

Oh Happy Day

A friend of mine who is starting her own events company recently asked for advice on selecting a stylish business card.  I have always been a fan of design that is unique and catching, while exercising just enough restraint to avoid looking kitschy.  I think this philosophy applies just as well to business cards as it does a formal dining room or cocktail dress.  I sent her some links to a few of my favorites and started thinking that some of you might find them useful as well...
